Document every room, before and after
The deposit fight is won at the walkthrough, not the move-out. Print a room-by-room checklist, note the condition of everything, and photograph the damage that was already there. A record made on day one is hard to argue with on the last.

Make it hold up
- Photograph anything you note, with the date visible. A checked box is a claim; a photo is proof.
- Do the same walkthrough at move-out and compare. Wear and tear is the landlord's cost; damage is a fair deduction. The two checklists side by side show which is which.
- Keep a copy. If you can, have the landlord sign the move-in checklist too.
